Ospreys+ at Patuxent River Park, March 10

While getting out of the car in the AM, a dark bird with white head was seen flying downriver with a fish in foot. Seemed like an eagle, but was too small. It was the first osprey seen this year!
Close up of Our Boy and his new mate.
This time of year when ospreys fly next to the trees, sometimes a loud snap is heard. They break off branches in flight to build their nests.
The Live cam was turned on in the afternoon. Ms O is eating what appeared to be a goldfish.
Bald Eagle at Jug Bay in 2007. This was taken in another county across the River by a lady who volunteers at their Park. They must have user friendly birds!

Short-toed Eagle

The Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) is a medium-sized bird of prey.Has owl-like rounded head, yellow eyes and 3 or 4 stripes on the tail.Spends much time on the wing and can hover like a Kestrel. Feeds on snakes and rodents.
This is an Old World species spread throughout the Mediterranean basin and into Russia and the Middle East, and into parts of Asia .Those present on the northern edge of the Mediterranean and other parts of Europe migrate mainly to sub-Saharan Africa north of the equator, leaving in September/October and returning in April/May. They are in Greece year round. Yippee!

March 1 Snow * * *

Part of the Bicentennial pine tree. In 1976, all the kids came home from school with small pines in a can to plant. Ours is probably the only one on the block that lived. It is huge!
Sweetbay magnolia next to deck.
Unhappy flapper....
Crabapple in front yard.
