Park Pics 4-12-11

One of the redbuds near office....

Spring Beauties in eagle nest area....
Bad Hair/Feather Day
Altho it's a little blurry, you may have to enlarge to see Mom eagle's Rod Stewart spike hairdo. In my quest to see an eaglet before leaves cover the view, I noticed the brown "hump" next to Mom. But, it's her shoulder showing as she mantles chick(s) in rain. "Flugg" doesn't help either.....

Wet osprey Mom, too.... On Wed., 4-13 at Chelsea farmhouse office, the common weed Gill-over-the-ground gives color to a field...

Park Flora, 4-9-11

Through the winter, the smaller beech trees keep their leaves and show a nice contrast....

All the following are on the Nature Study Loop in the marsh.

Here are the roots of Big Beech.... Some of the tree. Hope he doesn't "tilt" soon....
Fiddlehead ferns sprouting amongst the skunk cabbage...
Beginnings of Virginia Bluebells. There are some trillium in the middle...

Decorah Triplets

Park Eagles, Mar., 2011

On the morning of 3-15-11, Mom was sitting in the nest. We had been quite concerned about family status of nest, as two adults together had not been seen there for a week and 1/2. An injured adult eagle had been discovered less than 2 miles from the Park and taken to rehab. We did not know if it was one of this nesting pair......

One week later, 3-22-11 AM, an adult sat below the nest. Are there one or two??.... That afternoon, an adult was again sitting in tree in front of nest...... All of a sudden, the female flew out of the nest and joined him in conversation!!!! There are TWO......
She flew off first, the male followed, they chirped and did circles in the sky. She then came back to the nest and he continued towards the River.....

More Park Eagles

We were greeted by male eagle above the nest on the morning of 3-26-11....

The whole view..... Junior, one of our juvie eagles landed in a tree near the office and River that afternoon. We don't often see the eagles nearby since the ospreys have arrived....
On 3-29-11, here is the normal view of the nest.......

Park Waterfowl

On the morning of 3-15-11, four pairs of wood ducks landed in trees next to the Patuxent River. Here is a female with the distinctive white "teardrop" around her eye....

There was a heron convention with one great egret on 3-29-11! Ten herons and the one egret started the meeting, but by afternoon the egret and three herons remained....... Storm clouds appear over Mt. Calvert Mansion in the background on 4-5-11. In the foreground is a heron under the osprey platform.....
