Nature Seen Jan. 29 & 30

Surprise! First sighting of Mr. Y-B Sapsucker yesterday......
Mrs. has been on here recently, but want to compare the red markings.....
From the road, the light oval patch at top right of the Park eagle nest looks deceptively like an eagle's head. But, NO. They did that so we'll be late punching the time clock!
This afternoon, saw Shorty eating the birds' suet, so took out some peanuts. It did the trick!
A pal joined Shorty~~~white-throated sparrow....

Local Screech Owl

Here's the Turner Screech Owl. I think they call him Camo! They sent me a picture taken through kitchen window of lady friend I work with who lives in Brandywine, MD.

Paw Paw, WV 1-23-10

On our trip to and fro, we HAD to stop at some World Famous Landmarks.....
Behind our friends' house, this little screech owl has resided for a couple years. His first home was on the first floor, but he built an addition upstairs! He looks like the "red phase". They can be red, brown, or gray....
Taking a sunbath.......
One reason for trip was to fetch the New, Old car. This was taken at it's original home in PA....

Schoolhouse Pond 1-21-10

Road Xing!
and the reason.....
Sculpture by John Mullican...
On the frozen part of the pond, the seagulls stood , while the Canada geese took the melted sections along the edge.
Heron on wood duck box and some mallards along the edge.

European Critters

Here are some cam pics from EENet in Estonia. Below is their Tree Sparrow...
Two tree sparrows and a greenfinch. Actually saw them change the suet ball at this session!...
Wild boars at the Tartu County site.... Most of the rowdies hang out at the West Viru County site. The sounds are more like bears than "little piggies". Both boar sites are lit, so can be seen evenings, our time.

Park Eagle Nest Jan., 2010

Morning of Jan. 16 revealed TWO in the nest, altho somewhat blurry. This will be the third year they've nested in this area. (Wish they had a weed whacker!)
Two heads are better than one....
Heads and tails... First sighting this season of adult in the nest. It had been standing tall, probably doing nestorations.

Eagles at the Park Jan. 5, 2010

This "old" juvie was perched next to the road near the Visitor's Center...
Saw this one land. Don't know if it was a different one, or not.
An adult came to same area in the afternoon....

...and then flew to the osprey platform. It left and caused a big flurry among the seagulls...

Landed on frozen Jug Bay.....

Winter Birds

Greenfinch at the bottom with a Blue Tit on the EENet bird feeder cam...
Birds at the Park
Almost orange! Mockingbird behind the winterberry...
Tufted titmouse with goldfinch friends. Some still have a slight tinge of yellow...

New Year Birds

This lovely bird joind a sparrow at the EENet cam feeder early on 1-4-10. It is a Great Tit and in the same family as the American titmice and chickadees.
Going for a spin........
Carolina wren at the Park... Our favorite red-bellied buddy at home.......
