Sutton Eagle Nest, OK

PRP Eagles and Lavender Farm Trip

On morning of Friday, 6-26, had seen flapping at the nest when entering Park for a trip. In the evening, saw one in the nest. It flew away, but soon TWO eaglets flew back to nest area.
Here's a fair but lucky shot aimed at area where one had landed.....
Farm trip to Fairfield, PA....
They specialize in lavender and host a Lavender Festival every mid-June.

Days of Our Flicker

On Sunday, 6-21, a Northern, or yellow-shafted, flicker appeared in our yard for the first time. She started digging a nesthole in a 10' tall dead tree trunk.

Feathery Friends at Home

On Monday, 6-22, Ms. Flicker brought her male buddy to visit the tree. He sat for awhile and flew away. Got to see the black cheek "whiskers" called malars that indicate the males.
Ms. Flicker returned---woman's work is never done!
Here is some of the sawdust "fruit" of her labor. On Sunday, 6-28, both visited the tree! Mr. actually went in the nesthole for inspection then flew away. Ms went back to work removing wood chips.
A REALLY long nest in the Sweetbay magnolia tree....
Here's Ms. Robin.......

Park Friends of Feather and Fur

Was very rainy on Sat., 6-20. Bluebird landed on top the Stop sign to try and get dry.
We use milk carton scoop to fill bird feeders. Had to leave and answer phone, and this critter made a dash to check for seeds!

At the Acropolis

This is close to the beginning of the climb up the Acropolis. A corner of the Parthenon is seen at the top. If you enlarge, the two black spots left of that corner at top of the wall are PEOPLE!
English information is on the right side of this sign.
The Parthenon!
Parthenon at night....
This beautiful ancient theatre found part way up the Acropolis is still in use....
Here is the finale of a concert at that theatre on the evening of 5-27-09...

Mosaic Birds

These birds are a small sample of the following picture. They are on a subway entrance wall! The Athens' subway system is it's own museum with many artifacts that were found and some still in place when under construction.

Some Birds of Greece

Some collared doves at the National Garden, Athens.
The "collar" shows on this one who was at the Acropolis. They are larger and louder than our mourning doves.
A blackbird at the Gardens. It has a distinctive orange-yellow bill.
A magpie clinging to edge of an ancient theatre at the Acropolis where performances are still held!
Our favorite, the hoopoe, came in for a landing while we were descending the Acropolis. It looked at first like a large woodpecker. The crest can open and each tan feather is topped by a black ball.

Hooded Crow Hovering

It was extremely windy for a day and 1/2 when we were on Santorini, a volcanic island. Finally got a so-so pic of a hooded crow hovering in the wind on June 3, '09.

Greek Flowers

In Athens, we saw bougainvillea, oleander and geraniums except flowers planted and on display at the National Garden. The first two pics were on Mykonos Island.
How's this for a geranium bush?
Daughter, Sherry, under bougainvillea....
That day, we were on our way by boat to island of Delos. It is the oldest site with the largest amount of archaeological artifacts in Greece. It is supposedly the birthplace of twins Apollo and Artemis. The following are wildflowers we saw there.
Small poppies....
Queen Anne's lace w/what looks like lavender phlox and unknown yellow wildflowers...
Some lovely light purple flowers with a few poppies.

6-06-09 Moon and Happy Landings

Here's the moon at 8:23 PM from 30 minutes south of Wash., D.C.
Here's a hazy look from plane at 8:33 PM.
Meerkat befriended Myki, a Mykonos donkey, and invited him to the States. Last view of Santorini, the volcano island, before flying to Athens on 6-5-09.
Touchdown at last!
Closer view ☺
